Colloidal gold carries negative charges in weakly alkaline environments and can form a strong binding with positively charged protein molecules. As this binding is electrostatic, it does not affect the biological characteristics of proteins.Colloidal gold is widely used in fields such as immunology, histology, pathology, and cell biology.
